HOUSTON -- Officials say a child was killed in an accident on the South Loop.
Authorities say around 1:30 p.m. Friday, a man was driving westbound on the I-610 South Loop near Telephone Road. He lost control of his vehicle and swerved on and off the grassy median before flipping his black SUV on its side and sliding into a concrete barrier.
Officials said a girl under the age of five was ejected from the SUV. She died at the scene.
The driver was wearing his seatbelt and was not hurt.
Investigators are looking into what caused the man to swerve off the road.
Houston TranStar officials say the fatality accident closed all westbound main lanes of I-610 South Loop near Telephone Road. The westbound entrance ramp is blocked, with traffic forced to continue on the access road. The closure and resulting traffic congestion is expected to last through the rush hour.
