HOUSTON -- Two days after a Houston father was shot and killed, his family expressed inconsolable grief.
John Martinez, 45, was gunned down in the driveway outside his southwest Houston home Saturday night for his wallet, keys and cell phone.
“They were so horrible,” said Norma Martinez, his wife. “They shot him, not once, but three times. Once wasn’t enough. He must have fought them.”
Investigators think he may have been followed home around 10 p.m. after visiting his brother. His wife and son were on the other side of the door when the shots rang out.
“We opened the door,” said Martinez. “He was already unconscious, and he was bleeding, and I was screaming.”
The screams have since been replaced by tears, as they mourn the death of a man they said was always there for them in any capacity needed.
“It’s hard,” said his sister, Isabel Martinez. “He was my dad. My brother. He was a good man who always thought positive and always would do things right.”
The question haunting them all is how could anyone do something so wrong?
“It’s terrible,” said Carlos Martinez, the victim’s brother. “We’re just so desperate. If anybody has any information about what went on that night, please give us a call. We just want answers.”
They also want the world to know a little about the man who was taken from them.
“I just want people to know he left behind four beautiful children,” said Norma Martinez. “Three girls and my son -- he was everything to me. He was my soulmate.”
It’s a bond which can’t be broken even by death, she said.
