HOUSTON -- The family of a Houston woman who was injured in a catastrophic train derailment in Spain says she has died.
Myrta Fariza died early Sunday in a hospital in Santiago de Compostela, the family said in a written statement on Facebook.
Myrta and her husband, Robert Fariza, were passengers on the train that derailed last Wednesday, killing at least 79 people.
“Myrta was our loving wife, mother, sister and friend and words cannot express our sense of loss,” the Fariza family said in a statement released Sunday afternoon. “To all who knew her, Myrta provided irreplaceable love, compassion, courage, friendship and support. We will miss her dearly.”
The woman's husband was not seriously injured and even spoke to the media following the crash.
The family says they are leaning on faith, family and community as they mourn Fariza.
Following the train crash, family and friends created a Facebook page titled “Hope for Myrta” where they collected donations and shared information.
