HOUSTON—A former employee of the Colombian Consulate in Houston is in jail.

Authorities say Maria Hurtado took money from Colombian nationals for services she never performed.

Investigators say it all happened over an eight-year period when Hurtado worked at the consulate, as well as after she left the job a year ago.

Hurtado is accused of targeting Colombians in detention, promising to get them visas for a price.

She allegedly took more than $100,000 from at least 25 victims who were eventually deported.
