HOUSTON— An investigation is underway after shots were fired at the Fort Bend County Animal Services facility.

It happened in the 1200 block of Blume Road in Rosenberg.

Deputies were called to the facility at 7:17 a.m. Friday and discovered several shots had been fired at the building in the middle of the night.

Evidence indicates six bullets were fired into the front windows of the building, investigators said. There were no injuries to employees or animals.

Earlier this week, the Fort Bend County Animal Services facility was criticized after it said two dogs were euthanized by mistake. The animal services facility admitted that protocol was not followed.

The dogs were put down within hours of coming into the shelter, and just as a rescue group was signing papers to take custody of them.

The shelter’s policy is to keep dogs for at least three days before a decision is made to euthanize the animal.

Investigators think outrage over this mistake may have led to the shooting.

“Right now we are early in the investigation, but that is really the only motive we can find, is this possible misstep they had a few weeks ago,” said Fort Bend Sheriff’s Captain James Burger.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation into Friday’s criminal mischief case is continuing.

The dog’s owners said they were saddened to hear someone would shoot up the shelter after what happened to their animals.

“I really want to make sure nobody is doing this because of what happened,” said Kimberly Lopez. “There are ways to handle things and that is not one of them.”

Lopez and her boyfriend drove around for days looking for their two dogs, Jake and Jaxx, only to find out on Facebook that they had been accidently put down by the shelter.

“They were our kids, they were our boys and now they are gone,” said Lopez. “Nothing is going to bring them back.”
