Neighbors in the small town of Brookshire are worried because a killer is still on the loose a week after a couple was shot to death inside their home.
”My prayer is that God just show us whoever and it be taken care of,” said Gwenda Henry at a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening.
Dozens of community members gathered at Logenbaugh Park in the center of town to mourn Stanley Jackson and Janella Edwards and share their concerns.
“It hurt everybody, “said Pastor Setterick Allen, a friend of the victims. “It’s like our own son; our own daughter had actually lost their lives. That’s how close we are in this community.”
Jackson and Edwards were found murdered in their home in the 3200 block of Third Street in the early morning hours of March 11.
The couple had been babysitting the Brookshire mayor’s two children, ages 6 and 9, at the time of the slayings. The 9-year-old called her mother telling her something was wrong. The mayor’s wife found the bodies.
“Janella and Stanley were good people and they didn’t deserve this,” said Henry. “But, it’s happened and the thing now is that we’re just praying that God will reveal whoever did this or they would just come forward.”
Friends, relatives and even former classmates attended the vigil to show support for the families of the victims.
“We lost touch after high school because we all went on with our lives, but I never forgot him,” said former Brookshire resident Glenda Jones.
Meanwhile, investigators say that piece of information about the case are coming together and they are closer than ever to making an arrest. They have a person of interest, but they have not yet released that person’s name.
The chief of police says they will continue to follow up on every lead.
