DALLAS — Police and fire officials shut down part of Dallas City Hall late Wednesday afternoon after a suspicious envelope arrived.
A Dallas Fire-Rescue hazardous materials team closed access to City Council offices under the assumption that a hazardous substance had been mailed to Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway.
Caraway said the envelope contained 95-percent pure crack cocaine. "I didn't open it," he said. "It was in my office, and the secretaries opened it."
Dallas Fire-Rescue declined to be specific about what the envelope contained. "Preliminary tests indicated the substance in the envelope to be of a non-lethal/toxic nature," said DFR spokesman Jason Evans in a written statement.
The Dallas Police Department and the FBI are trying to determine who sent that envelope.
No one was hurt.
