HOUSTON—A child was killed in a three-vehicle rollover crash on the Katy Freeway Tuesday morning.

Houston police said it happened around 8:35 a.m. in the outbound lanes between Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood.

Police said the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was a 6-year-old girl.

A teenager, an infant and an 11-year-old child were injured and taken to Texas Children’s Hospital. The extent of their injuries was not yet known.

Three adults were also hurt and transported to Memorial Hermann in unknown conditions.

Police said the crash occurred when a gray Dodge Charger got a flat tire in the westbound lanes and slowed down.

The driver of a white Plymouth Voyager minivan also slowed down to offer help.

Police said the minivan was struck from behind at freeway speeds by a black Ford Explorer, which then struck the Charger.

The Explorer rolled and ended up on its side next to the Charger, and the minivan, which sustained extensive damage to its back end, came to a rest a few lanes over. Debris, including car parts, toys and clothing, was strewn all over the road.

Police said one adult and the four kids were in the van, and the car and pickup each had one adult occupant.

HPD Sgt. G.T. Hall said the infant was strapped in a car seat in the middle row of the minivan, and the three older kids were in the far back seat.

"The [victim] appeared to have been moved into the middle seat, so they may not have been restrained – those that were in the back seat. The far back seat," Hall said.

Authorities blocked off all outbound lanes of the freeway while investigators worked the scene.

Traffic, which was at a near standstill for hours after the crash, was diverted to the Kirkwood exit and onto two managed lanes.

The scene was not cleared until after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
