HOUSTON – An undercover operation ended with the arrest of a car burglary suspect after a short chase near downtown Houston, police said.
Police set up the sting after a series of car burglaries were reported along the Allen Parkway jogging trails.
Police say a lot of people who jog or walk their dogs on the trail leave valuables in their cars and that makes them an easy target for thieves.
After a man was seen breaking into a car and grabbing a purse, police approached him. He took off running and jumped into a vehicle.
The brief chase ended around 3:40 p.m. at Jillette and Ruthven in the Montrose area.
At one point during the chase, the suspect ran into a patrol car.
Police said the man had been convicted of breaking into other cars and that he was on parole for robbery.
A woman’s purse was recovered from inside his vehicle, police said.
Burglary of a motor vehicle is the number one crime in Houston.
