HOUSTON—Authorities are tackling a growing problem that could be costing lives. They say more and more frustrated callers are hanging up on 911 operators.

What’s more, the problem has gotten so bad, they’re launching a campaign to stress the importance of staying on the line.

When a caller dials 911, the operator asks them a series of important questions. Those questions include the caller’s address, the type of emergency and details on injuries and weapons. The operator sometimes gives the caller instructions before the help ever arrives.

"We can coach people on how to initiate CPR. We can coach people over the phone how to relieve an obstructed airway so somebody can breathe again," Houston EMS Director Dr. David Persee said.

But officials say a growing number of those callers are abandoning their calls before they’re finished.

"Please stay on the line. Help us help you and answer our questions. I know callers get frustrated," Persee said.

Authorities are hoping their campaign of radio and TV ads, as well as signs on taxis and buses, will get the word out about the importance of staying on the line.

The reason is simple: They say a little information is all it takes to save a life.
