Amazon Prime customers went to Twitter early Thursday reporting an overnight message from the online retailer notified them of an increase in their monthly membership fees.
CNET reports that for the first time, Amazon will increase its Prime membership fees – from $79 to $99 a year. Amazon Student Prime will rise $10 to $49 a year ago. The increase will occur as members’ accounts come up for renewal.
Prime offers customers unlimited free two-day shipping on items ordered on the site, but it also gives them access to tens of thousands of online videos, and the ability to borrow from Kindle Owners' Lending Library.
The increase isn’t a huge surprise as rumors of a possible price hike have been swirling since earlier this year.
