HARVEY, La. -- Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand says 20-year-old Matthew Flugence showed no remorse as he was escorted into parish prison after his arrest for the murder of 6-year-old Ahlittia North.

The sheriff says he also appeared to make light of the situation.

"This morning when asked by one of the reporters as he was going through the sally-port into booking facility, he was asked, 'did you kill Ahlittia North?' said Normand. "His response was, 'And I (expletive) your mother, too.'"

The sheriff says Flugence's older brother, 21-year-old Russell Flugence, also made some troubling statements when arrested for obstruction of justice.

"His response to my officers was 'I don't give an "F" that little girl.'"

A woman who opened the door at the Flugence family home on Rue Racine in Marerro said, "I'm sorry. No comment," and quickly closed the door.

Neighbors say they can remember seeing Matthew Flugence visiting family members. They say it's hard to comprehend anybody could be capable of killing a little girl.

"I don't know what to call this type of being in the neighborhood, that would be capable of doing this type of heinous crime and seem to have no remorse," said Wallace Smith. "It's scary."

"It's horrendous, really," said Kasid Hakeem. "I'm sure most people are shocked to hear something like this happened."

Matthew Flugence has now admitted to killing Ahlittia North in Harvey and stands accused of sexually assaulting another young girl.

Normand says there seems to be a number of these types of instances running through this investigation.

"We are going to continue to run that out and making sure and ensuring of there are any other victims out there, that we're able to bring that to some conclusion as well."

The sheriff says if you have any information about Matthew Flugence or other possible victims, please call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
