SEATTLE - The Kitsap County Sheriff's Office said a 5-year-old boy was attacked by two dogs at a Silverdale home on Tuesday.
Scott Wilson with the sheriffs office said the child suffered serious head, face and neck injuries.
Wilson said the dogs belong to the child's mother's ex-boyfriend and she was watching them while he is incarcerated.
Wilson said the boy was outside playing with one of the dogs when it attacked him. Then the other dog, the mother of the first dog, joined in the attack.
Wilson said the boy's mother heard him screaming, came out and tried to stop the attack. When she couldn't she laid on top of her son.
"So, she did the next best thing, which is really courageous," Wilson said. "She laid herself down and covered the child, and the dogs started biting at her."
The great-grandfather of the boy came out, picked up the boy and took him in the house, where they called 911.
The boy was taken to Harrison Medical Center and airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Wilson said the boy was in serious to critical condition and required surgery.
The two dogs had been at the home for about a month, the boy's mother said. and there had been no previous problems.
"We have a situation where the dogs are temporarily being housed and by all appearances they were doing fine," Wilson said. "What happened here is anybody's guess."
One neighbor said he has noticed the dogs around the yard recently.
"The one that I know of is pretty big, comes up to my waist just about, very big," Brian Normandin said. "I hope everything goes okay. That is pretty frightening to be attacked."
The dogs were turned over to Kitsap Animal Rescue, which is the animal control branch of the Kitsap Humane Society.
