KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Kannapolis Police are investigating one of the most grisly murders they have ever seen.
Sunday night officers were called out to 2943 South Ridge Avenue to do a welfare check; they had to force their way inside where they found a 10-year-old boy murdered.
His mother, 32-year-old Christi Stewart, was seriously injured and had to be rushed to the CMC Northeast in Concord.
Early Monday morning, investigators tracked down the suspect, 39-year-old Eugene Mays. Gaston County Police assisted by pinging his cellphone which gave them his location off Forbes Road.
Mays is charged with first degree murder. Police say Mays and Stewart lived together, and had just met online three weeks ago.
Police won’t say how the 10-year-old was killed, but sources indicated that a gun was not used.
Officers are thankful that the victim's 12-year-old brother was not present. He was with his grandmother. When she brought him home and no one came to the door she called police.
Investigators don't know if the 10-year-old was killed trying to defend his mother. Her injuries are so serious she has not been able to talk to police.
Kannapolis Police requests anyone with information regarding this incident or the suspect’s location to call 704-920-4000.
