HOUSTON—Houston police have arrested and charged two suspects in connection with a robbery and sexual assault of a woman, and six other robberies at Terry Hershey Park.
Damontres Darnell Mitchell, 18, and Jassan Rashaad Hughes, 18, are each charged with one count of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
On Monday officers with the Houston Police Department Westside Division Tactical Unit found Mitchell near the park driving a vehicle that was stolen on Jan. 3 from a pizza delivery driver, police said.
“When (the order) arrived Damontres and Jassan ambushed the pizza driver. One came from behind and one from the front, pointed guns and took his car keys,” said Sgt. Cathy Richards.
Hughes was a passenger in the vehicle Monday and both were arrested after a brief police chase. A female was also in the vehicle, but police said she doesn’t appear to be involved in the park incidents.
Houston police said evidence led investigators to charge Mitchell and Hughes in the Jan. 3 sexual assault of a jogger in Terry Hershey Park along 989 Eldridge. The woman said she was followed into the bathroom around 8:20 a.m. and two men sexually assaulted her and stole her jewelry.
Investigators said they also believe the suspects are responsible for robberies at 600 Nottingham Oaks Trail on Dec. 14; 14800 Broadgreen on Dec. 16; 14814 Perthshire on Jan. 3; 1000 S. Dairy Ashford on Jan. 5; 15200 Memorial Drive on Jan. 5; and 1000 Dairy Ashford on Jan. 6.
Police said they believe there are more victims.
Terry Hershey Park visitors are still watching their backs carefully.
“I’m glad they caught them, I’m glad that police are patrolling the area more. Still everyone has to be on watch,” said Ashleigh Gardner.
