Protecting your holiday packages from thieves

A few tips on how to protect your precious packages from thieves.

Cyber Monday has come and gone, and now we wait for the packages to arrive. But you won’t be the only ones who are waiting.

Many call them porch pirates, but to police, they’re just thieves.

‘Tis the season to give, and apparently, it’s the season to take.

“We see an uptick, especially now," Precinct 1 Constable Alan Rosen said.

There’s no eye patch or pegged leg, but they're pirates, preying on porches and their unsuspecting packages.

It’s something Rosen says comes with the season.

“Have a plan for where your package is going to go and make sure that it’s done appropriately," Rosen said.

And when it comes to front porch protection, there are several devices that can help. Surveillance cameras are a given, or you can save a few bucks and get a lock box - just make sure the delivery driver is the only one who knows the code.

There’s also something new called the package guard. For $89, a package delivered to it can't be picked up without your neighbors being alarmed.

All of those cost money though, on top of the shipping and handling.

But some things in cyber life are actually free, like Amazon lockers. You can find them at grocery stores and even gas stations.

Delivering to your neighbors who are always home shouldn’t cost much, or you can send it to work or the even store from where you bought it.

“All of those things will contribute to reducing theft, it’s a deterrent. Also, it will help us solve package thefts if we have something to go on," Rosen said.
