Audi's new A5 Sportback draws fastback looks from A7

LOS ANGELES -- Audi had a problem.

It had good, not great, market share for its compact sedan and coupe, but the larger A7 coupe had become a hit, as Audi of America CEO Scott Keogh explains it.

Buyers loved the A7's looks, with a stunning tapering roofline, a fastback appearance, that has been widely imitated ever since it was introduced. Owners, in fact, love the car so much that the average price they have been paying for it is a whopping $78,000, Keogh said as the car was being unveiled here ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

So Audi borrowed the look for the new A5 and S5. The five-door will come in a hatchback, called a Sportback, that translates some of the appearance of the A7 into the small car. It arrives next year as a 2018 model.

There will also be plenty of oomph under the hood.

The new A5 will come with a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed transmission or six-speed manual good for 252 horsepower. It goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in as little as 5.6 seconds.

The S5 has a 3-liter V-6 that spits out 354 horsepower, and can cover zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds.
