Texans to hire Brad Seely as special teams coordinator

It seems like the Houston Texans have had one of the league’s worst special teams units ever since they entered the league.

The team parted ways with Larry Izzo and assistant Doug Colman last week, leaving them searching for a third special teams coordinator in the time since Bill O’Brien’s arrival as head coach. To fill the role, the Texans have tabbed veteran coach Brad Seely, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Seely, 61, is one of the NFL’s most tenured special teams gurus, with 23 years of experience with a slew of NFL teams. Seedy spent the last three seasons with the Raiders under Jack Del Rio. Like many Texans coaches has extensive connections with New England, coordinating special teams for the Patriots between 1999 and 2008. During that period he worked alongside both Bill O’Brien and assistant head coach Romeo Crennel, and thus the pair will know his abilities and character well.

The Texans have spoken of wanting to be more consistent on special teams, something Izzo’s units never managed to achieve. A star special-teamer in his playing days, Izzo appeared to over-complicate things as a coach, and individual errors were all too common during his spell. Brad Seely’s experience and knowledge is second-to-none, and the Texans will hope he can be the one to bring stability and solidity to the unit.
