Standoff ends with man's apparent suicide after shots fired at police in N. Houston

Police responded and reported at least two gunshots were fired in their direction. As a SWAT team was called in, one of the men apparently shot and killed himself.

Police believe three men involved in a north Houston swat standoff outside of a home were high on drugs.

They say a woman at a house on the 200 block of Van Molan called 911 just after 10 a.m. Thursday to report a bad smell coming from a truck that had pulled into the driveway of her home.

Police say firefighters responded first and saw three men inside of the pick-up truck. They tried to make contact with the men but were unsuccessful and called for police to respond.

“All three individuals that were inside the vehicle had been on dope pretty much all night long,” said Houston Police Department Sergeant Richard Rodriguez. "They’d been on a bender since early early this morning. They come back here, continue using dope inside the vehicle, which was probably what the foul odor is, and because of that, the impaired judgment, being high on dope, it goes down the way it goes down.”

Police say when the two officers arrived, they pulled up to the pick-up truck, and one of the men immediately shot at them.

Their patrol vehicle was hit twice.

Police say their officers took cover, did not return fire and called for backup.

The standoff ended before 11 a.m. Thursday when one of the men inside of the truck shot and killed himself, according to police.

“A self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” said HPD Chief Art Acevedo. “He did that while the other two suspects that were in the suspicious vehicle were inside the truck.”

The other men inside of the truck surrendered to police and were taken into custody.

Police say the men are both in their 20s and are facing potential criminal charges.

Detectives believe the men were using a “cocaine-based substance,” more commonly known as crack, according to Sgt. Rodriguez.
