HEB offers in-store dietitians

HOUSTON -- Need a pantry makeover? Looking for easy weeknight dinners? Or, do you just need someone to help you put away the potato chips? HEB is now offering a new initiative to help makeover your grocery cart. They've introduced in-store dietitians to help you find the healthiest options for your family.

"So we take into consideration if you have any allergies, food preferences, cultural preferences, even cooking skills or lack thereof," Rita Zapien, RD, said. Zapien is one of HEB's nutritionists who is available to consult with shoppers. Not only does the program offer in-store consultation, it also offers work-site wellness evaluations, and all of the services you would expect from an in-hospital dietitian.

Zapien says the program is all about convenience. "Some people visit the grocery store twice a week, and their doctor not at all."

Today, she is shopping with mom-blogger Rachel Matthews of A Southern Fairytale Blog to help her develop some new back-to-school breakfasts for her kids. Rachel has spoken to several audiences about food blogging, including at Blog Elevated.

Rachel says working with Zapien helps her create healthy meals she can share with her two children, Olivia and Noah, and her followers.

"So having her not only helps me and my family, but it helps me on my blog reach thousands of others that may not have this ability," Rachel says. "One of the kids favorite recipes with these is to bake them in the little mini muffin tins , with some spinach, cheese, and some onion."

For the back to school breakfasts, Zapien recommends incorporating healthy sources of protein and fiber, such as peanut butter, eggs, dairy milk, and high-fiber cereal.

But the HEB in-store dietitians can help you with whatever your nutrition needs. "I will help people one on one in the aisles, and I 'll notice that they're reading the nutrition facts panel and I'll just start up a conversation," she says.
