Giff Nielsen

KHOU Sports Director Giff Nielsen anchors sports at 5pm, 6pm and 10pm weekdays.

He has an extensive sports background, having played professional football, college football and basketball. Giff attended Brigham Young University on a football and basketball scholarship. During his junior year, he turned his full attention to football as quarterback for the BYU Cougars. The Football Writers of America named him an All-American. The National Collegiate Athletic Association chose Giff as one of the top five scholar athletes and he recently received the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award.

He graduated from BYU with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in 1977. The Houston Oilers drafted Giff in May 1978. He played quarterback for the team for six years before retiring in May 1984 to join the Channel 11 News anchor team.

Giff is on the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America, Sam Houston Area Council. He has been inducted into the BYU Hall of Fame, the Utah Hall of Fame and into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Giff hosts an annual golf tournament in Houston that benefits local children's charities, including the United Way’s Kid’s Way. The tournament has raised approximately $3,000,000 since its inception in 1986.

Giff and his wife, Wendy, reside in Southwest Houston and have six children.
