HOUSTON—A Prairie View A&M student died Tuesday after experiencing difficulty during an early-morning run.

School officials said Donnie Wade, a biology major, was running at Hempstead High School when he went into distress.

He was taken to North Cypress Medical Center Hospital, where he died.

Officials said university police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Wade’s death.

"The entire Prairie View family is saddened by Donnie’s death.  He was an emerging leader and scholar who significantly contributed to the university community.  We are deeply moved by his death and extend our condolences to his family and friends during their time of bereavement," said Prairie View A&M President George C. Wright.

Wade, who was originally from Dallas, was a second-semester transfer student from Stephen F. Austin University.

School officials said grievance counseling and assistance will be provided to Prairie View students and faculty.
