HOUSTON—A woman was shot early Wednesday after she interrupted a suspect allegedly breaking in to her neighbor’s apartment, according to Houston police.

Two sisters were in their apartment in the 7000 block of Hillcroft at Edgemoor when they heard someone breaking in to a neighbor’s downstairs unit around midnight.

Maria Nava, 36, and her sister began to yell at the suspect, but then he ran upstairs and got into a scuffle with them. The suspect opened fire on the women, then fled the scene, police said.

Nava was shot in the neck and the arm. Her son, Jose Torres, was asleep on the couch when the shooting happened.

“I kinda feel sad,” says the 10-year-old. “If I was awake, I would have jumped in front of her because that’s my mom.”

Nava was transported to Ben Taub Hospital in serious, but stable condition. Her sister was not hit.

The suspect remained on the loose. Police said he broke in to the neighbor’s home after all, and stole a cell phone.
