HOUSTON—On the ninth floor of Texas Children’s Hospital, you’ll find stories that will break your heart.

It’s the cancer floor, where children like 4-year-old Grant and 2-year-old Lucas are fighting for their lives.

But once a week, the kids are greeted by volunteers pushing carts loaded with goodies.

"We have a rotation schedule, where we have shoppers for toys and shoppers for groceries," Peni Green of Big Love Cancer Care said.

Big Love is an organization of volunteers who deliver dolls, books, diapers and anything else families whose children are battling cancer might need.

"Big Love is great – they do a lot for all the families and make it a lot easier," Christian Pontikes, whose child is fighting cancer, said.

The volunteers show up because they care and they understand.

"Oh, it’s just so much love I have in my heart and so much compassion, because I was here," volunteer Valerie Garcia said.

Her son died of cancer at age 17.

Big Love was started in honor of Brooke Phillips, who lost her fight with leukemia at age 5.

"She had a big family that loved her and brought her things all the time, and what her family found was families around them didn’t always have everything they needed," Green said.

So now, an organization born out of loss is giving back.
