AUSTIN -- With last week’s release of year-end presidential contribution data, the Texas Tribune has developed an application to track donations by ZIP code. It allows readers to explore where each major candidate received support in Houston and across the state.
Despite having less than five months as an active presidential candidate in 2011, Gov. Rick Perry took advantage of his well-established fundraising machine. He overwhelmingly outperformed his opponents, raising $10.8 million last year in Texas. Perry’s haul represents half of the total money given in Texas to all candidates ($21.6 million).
After Perry, President Obama had the second biggest pick-up in Texas with $3.7 million.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul are the only other candidates to break through $1 million, raising $3 million and $1.5 million, respectively.
