FORT WORTH, Texas - The search for Jessica Smith and her mother Kimberly has expanded into New Mexico, where authorities have joined in on the search and Amber Alert signs are now flashing on the interstates.
Police have stated that they believe 11-year-old Jessica, of Fort Worth, is in danger while with her mother, who family has described as mentally ill and suicidal.
The daughter was taken by her mother from their Indiana Avenue home overnight Monday, police said. While the mother does have custody of Jessica, authorities said they do have evidence that has led them to believe the child is in danger while in her care. Authotiries said she has threatened to injure her children in the past.
A second Amber Alert was issued in New Mexico as authorities received a tip that she may have been taken to the state.
The Fort Worth Star Telegram released new information in connection to the young girl's father, 36-year-old Phillip Monroe Smith. They reported Smith was arrested after allegation of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14 last October. He was released from jail afte posting a $100,000 bond.
Authorities say the suspect may likely be driving her 2007 silver Mazda CX9 with Texas plates MBZ-390.
