DALLAS — The three candidates running for governor in the Republican primary faced off for the second and final time Friday night in the Belo Debate.

In their first face-off, Rick Perry showed why he does well on the attack—and not so well when attacked.

Kay Bailey Hutchison attempted to build on her solid performance and cleared up the abortion question. Debra Medina’s performance was critical. Things were quite different this time around.

11 News anchor Len Cannon served as a panelist for Friday’s debate, along with senior political writer Wayne Slater of The Dallas Morning News and news anchors Sarah Lucero of KENS and Terri Gruca of KVUE. WFAA veteran news anchor John McCaa served as moderator.

In Friday’s debate, Perry, Medina and Hutchison shifted dynamics and KHOU political expert Bob Stein said Friday’s debate was much better than the first.

“There were better questions than the first debate,” said Stein. “Hutchison seemed more prepared, self assured and confident.”
Stein said in his opinion it is clear which two will battle for the seat.

“Hutchison and Perry established themselves as the front runners,” he said. “They didn’t let Medina run away with the debate like they did the first time.

The Belo debate was seen in nearly all of Texas’ 19 media markets, providing the candidates their deepest reach yet to voters.
A total of 1,436 participated in the LIVE chat from across the state. There were also over 1,300 LIVE streaming views on KHOU.com

Viewers who participated in the live online chat with political pundits and other voters around the state had a lot to say. Here are a few of their comments:

“No doubt Medina is making this race much more interesting,” said Will in Euless.
“Perry hammers KBH for being a Washington-type but then pushes his responsibility off to Washington,” said Dan in Fort Worth.
“Texas has its own boarder and Perry should secure it,” said Jeff Cambeis.
“It’s going to be a Kay and Rick show tonight,” said Kathy JB.
“Seems this debate is garnering lots of interest from outside Texas,” said Wil in New York.

Readers also voted for their favorite candidate in a mobile texting poll during 11 News at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. The result of the unscientific-statewide poll offered a glimpse of the candidates’ popularity with voters before the March primary.

11 News asked viewers who they thought would win Friday's debate and they answered.
The results of the polls are as follows:

5 p.m. Poll Results:

Hutchison: 30%
Medina: 42%
Perry: 28%

6 p.m. Poll Results:
Hutchison: 24%
Medina: 52%
Perry: 24%

10 p.m. Poll Results:

Hutchison: 10%
Medina: 68%
Perry: 22%

Just think about this... if you saved 10k a year in property taxes what would you do with that money. That is what FREEDOM is all about. The choice to spend or save or invest your hard earned money. Imagine the amount of jobs that could create? Imagine how that could help struggling families. Medina has real solutions for real individuals her in Texas. We are fortunate to have this lady standing up for us.

As a Perry supporter, I thought there was no way I could vote for anybody else until Last Night. I was wrong. After the debate I found myself in a position that I could not deny, Debra Medina is the only real conservative running. I will be voting for her.

About E Verify - Here's a quote from the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) web site: "Even the Social Security Administration (SSA), one of the governmental agencies potential employees’ records are verified through, admits to errors in its system. An internal assessment in 2006 found that approximately 4.1 percent of records need to be updated and could result in incorrect feedback for employment verification purposes. In fact, the SSA self-reported (PDF) that around 17.8 million of its files contain incorrect data. Of that 17.8 million, 12.7 of those files concern U.S. citizens." All E Verify does at present is allow companies to use it as an excuse to avoid the due diligence that any reasonable and proper background search would disclose. When a company is caught employing illegals currently, all they have to say is, "Well, we used E Verify" to avoid any penalty. Debra Medina knows that E Verify is a ruse to help politicians who depend on the support of uneducated voters.

I will vote for Debra Medina. Unfortunately, I don't think that very many Republicans have the guts to vote for a candidate that might honor their constitutional restraints and possibly deny Republican voters the pork barrel benefits they have come to depend on and now enjoy. But regardless of who the pundits claim has a chance of winning, I'm voting for Ms. Medina. For once it will feel good to be voting FOR someone instead of AGAINST the lesser of two evils.

Finally - a debate that asked some direct questions that "We Texans" wanted answers to, Thank You Belo for hard boundaries, hard questions, cause "We": are tired of all the dancing that our political leaders have been giving us. Now that is the way a debate should be handled.

How on earth does Stein see KBH and Perry establishing themselves as frontrunners? Did I watch the same debate? Perry shifted blame and refused to take responsibility for anything except his enterprise fund, which KBH pretty well skewered. KBH talked an awful lot without ever actually saying anything. Perry smirked through the entire debate, as if annoyed that anyone would actually question his performance. Medina gave clear answers and didn't shy away from anything she was asked. Clear winner: Medina.

I didn't agree with Medina on much, I agree with KBH, that E-Verify should be enforced in this state, as well as a Push for No Drivers Licence for Illegals . All in all I would not vote for Medina so I am between KBH and Perry.
