HOUSTON – Southwest Freeway drivers witnessed a police chase that ended with the suspects’ car in flames Tuesday afternoon.
The suspects crashed their car into the median of the northbound lanes near Shepherd. It burst into flames and they jumped out and took off running.
Police caught up with all three suspects and took them into custody. One of them had a panic attack and was taken to an area hospital to be checked out.
Bellaire police say officers tried to stop the suspects to question them about a burglary and that's when the chase started.
When the chase ended, police found a 300-pound safe filled with jewelry and papers inside the burned out car.
The burglary victims say nothing else was taken from their home. They say the burglars broke a window in their master bedroom and dragged the safe out of a closet.
"Immediately, I was told they caught the guys and I was, just couldn’t have been more elated," said homeowner Lynn Kellehner. "I was, like, ‘You caught them?’ It was such fabulous news."
The northbound lanes of 59 were shut down for awhile while Houston firefighters put out the car fire.
