HOUSTON – A driver ran a red light and crashed into an SUV loaded with teens, killing two girls in northeast Houston early Friday, police said.

Police said the suspect was driving a Toyota Camry north on the Highway 59 North feeder around 1:30 a.m. when he ran a red light and smashed into a Ford Excursion traveling east on the Sam Houston Tollway feeder.

A big rig driver, who was also waiting at the light, saw the whole thing.

"When the light turned green, he noticed that the Toyota Camry traveling north was traveling at a high rate of speed and he felt that he wasn't gonna stop so he stayed where he was at," said HPD Sgt. I. Izaguirre. "But the Ford Excursion didn't see that car..."

The SUV was carrying a man, a woman and five teenage girls.

Three of the teens, who weren't wearing seat belts, were thrown from the vehicle when it slammed into a utility pole. Two of the ejected teens, ages 16 and 13, died at the scene.

"I believe there is a strong possibility that lives would have been saved had seat belts been used," said Sgt. Izaguirre.

A third teen was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition.

The other passengers were transported to a hospital in serious condition.

Blood alcohol test results on the Camry driver are pending. No charges have been filed in the case.

Yes. I know. My other little cousin, her brother, is soooo broken hearted. From what I hear at least I haven't had a day off to get up there. But I've heard from their grandmother that he is just depressed. He's only ten. He will never fully recover. Funeral in this Thursday at 12. All my family will be there except for me. I want to cry knowing that I'll miss it because of a mandatory training for my mom. I want to see her one last time...

reaganld94 - I agree with you, he killed your cousin because he ran a red light. Whether it was beacuse he was on the phone, changing his radio, in a hurry or just plain stupid does not matter. He MURDERED three people through his careless actions. My point is just that people are always yelling about drunk drivers killing people, but when a sober driver kills someone through stupidity, everyone says 'it was just an accident'. Running a red light is NOT an accident, it is a deliberate and reckless act. It happens all the time because people don't want to stop and try to accelerate through on the yellow thinking they will make it.

Blood alcohol test results on the Camry driver are pending. There is NO evidence he was drunk, YET! I will agree he is guilty of murdering three people by running a red light whether he turns out to be drunk or sober at the time.

The 16 year-old teen that was thrown from the SUV was my older cousin. I see her all the time about 25 times a year. We filled eggs together this last easter for a family easter egg hunt. Because of what happened I won't be able to see her again. I won't be able to play around with her again. Because of some stupid person who decided to drive drunk and not take into consideration what might happen, our family will never be the same. They took someone from us and now we have to pay the price. The thanksgivings won't be the same. Easter won't be the same. Family reunions at the park won't be the same. We are a broken chain that's missing a link now. We just have to pull together and hang tight.

So sad. My condolences to the families involved. It's terrible to lose a child. As to the seatbelts. Yes, they should have been wearing seatbelts, but bear in mind that wearing a seatbelt is no guarantee that a wreck will be survivable even if you are not thrown out of a moving vehicle. I lost my dad in a car wreck and he was a devoted seatbelt user. It just wasn't a survivable crash. While being ejected from a vehicle is usually a death sentence for the ejectee, seatbelts do not provide armor-like protection in the vehicle - they just normally keep you from being thrown out to usually certain death. I'll refrain from commenting on the sobriety issue until the results are in because sober people are just as capable of running a red light and killing someone just because they're in a hurry or trying to "stretch" a yellow light.

Heard on the 10 pm news ( of another station) that the 3rd teen that was in critical condition passed away. May God be with the family and friends of these 3 teens killed in this accident, again by a DRUNK ! Makes me beyond sick.

Why is it most of the time the one who causes the wreck walks away unhurt? The driver of the car was probably drunk as a skunk. Take this SPOS out and run over him with a big 18 wheeler going 100 miles an hour. Justice is served.

It doesn't really matter if the driver turns out to be drunk or not. He ran a red light and MURDERED two people, THAT is what is important. It gets old hearing everyone complaining about drunk drivers, but acting like sober drivers who kill people 'just had an accident'.

kado 22 says: I have a simple solution, you kill someone while DUI or DWI and its automatically third degree murder, with mandatory 5-15 years in prison. I'll go you one better. How about you kill someone while DUI and its automatically a capital murder charge. When convicted you get the death sentence and spend some time with the other filthy scum on death row before they stick the needle in your arm and send you to hell where you belong. These a**holes murderers need to die badly.

Just re-read the story and see there were adults in the car. Wonder what relation they were to the 5 teenage girls. Can't always trust the news media to get the facts straight (or let FACTS get in the way of a good story), and sometimes anybody over 17 gets called an adult.

What are a carload of teens (one only 13!) doing out at 1:30 AM? That means they're sharing the road with DRUNKS trying to find their way home from the bar by braille. When I was a kid, my folks had me on a curfew, and when I had teenagers, they had curfews as well, AND THIS IS WHY! As an emergency responder, whenever I go out after midnight to an "accident", I figure if I don't find a drunk SOMEWHERE on the accident scene, then I'm missing a patient. AND I always assume the driver of any other vehicle I encounter enroute to that wreck at that time of the night is drunk. That wariness has probably saved my life many times.

This is absolutely infuriating!!!!!!!! The lives of so many are affected due to one person's simple act of stupidity! This was not JUST a car accident. Yes, accidents happen, but why increase the chances by doing something so stupid behind the wheel?! Two lives have been lost... may they rest in peace and may their families and friends find peace somehow in this tragedy. When will people wake up and see that things like this don't just happen in the news to other people... the person in the news could be me or you!

You can (WHAT IF) this story to death. The reality is two people are dead, you can place the blame all on the one that ran the lite or you can say it was 90% his and 10% the other driver. You can break it down as you wish but its not going to soften the hurt these families will have to endure the rest of their lives. All this could have been prevented from both angles.

I have a simple solution, you kill someone while DUI or DWI and its automatically third degree murder, with mandatory 5-15 years in prison. NO EXCEPTIONS! You have the POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY to stop when you need to stop. As long as we treat it as a "OPS, mistake do happen and we must have compassion and try to help them, removes all accountability and responsibility of the individual.

A very bad tragedy. Bad enough that once again, a drunk person involved in a deadly accident but like almost all the posts & how I felt when they first aired this tragedy--- which they said noone had seatbelts on & all 3 girls ejected. I do not understand the parents especially not making sure the children were not buckled up. I do not move until I make sure all children in my car are buckled and same if adults ride with me. A sad lesson to teach at the cost of 2 young girls killed and another one critically injured. Praying for the young girl in the hospital and the parents of the 2 girls killed. Heard the father of one of the girls was driving the SUV. God be with the families and hope they throw the book at the drunk driver. This is getting way out of hand. Mainly due to light sentences & allowing them to have many DWI's. Laws must be changed and made stricter for DWI especially if a fatality is involved.

When driving late at night/early morning hours, just because the light turns green, doesn't mean you are SAFE to go. I usually look around before taking off...you never know what the other person is up too at that time. There is also a lot of road construction and the lighting isn't all that great around this area...my parents live down the road. Tragic. Wear seatbelts.

My deepest & sincere sympathy to all the families. I think drunk drivers should automatically have their drivers licenses suspended. One DUI, you're DONE for awhile & after mandatory alcohol counseling/rehab. Too many drivers with DUI's are still on the road after multiple citations. This has GOT to end.

We can blame the parent for not wearing a seatbelt. My kids never went without one. They girls would probably still be alive. People run red lights all the time. the driver should have paid more attention before advancing expecially at this time of night. Dont go out after 11pm to 3am. I feel very sorry for the family of the girls.

Seven people in an SUV, not everyone buckled up=tragedy. The law is that ALL passengers are to buckle up. Not to condone the drunk driver, but it the driver of the SUV had followed the law too, maybe these girls would be alive. I also wonder what 13 & 16 yr olds are doing out at 1:30 AM, I thought there was a curfew for teens??? Sympathy to the girls families.

I was a drunk driver one night. I did not have my seatbelt on. I went the wrong way on Dallas Pierce elavated and found a young man in his Ford and hit him head on. He had his seatbelt on, thank God. I am disabled now. I almost ruined the lives of 2 families. Back then the bar was responsible for drunks leaving. Now the bar tenders are. They take classes to know the size and possible weight of someone so they can monitor their consumption. I have been to places where they just keep pouring. And I have been to places that cut you off after 3. Of course that night was my fault and I take full responsiblity for it. I am sorry these young girls lost their lives. Ben Taub saved my life. I hope the girl at the hospital will be okay soon. I hope she can walk out on her own. I am always watching now afraid of stop lights. God bless your families.

It's pretty obvious the seat belts saved the other lives. This is an awful tragedy and horrible lesson. Prayers to the families and friends. RIP. SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES! DRUNKS KILL!

Yes, now that the video has been posted, I can understand the 1:30 A.M. thing. Lucky for me I survived childhood during a time when no one wore seat belts. But these days, there's just no excuse for not wearing one. I don't even have to think about buckling up. It's just something I do automatically like closing the car door. You wouldn't drive down the street with your door open, would you? As tragic as this accident is, hopefully it can be a lesson to someone and save a life.

james_nac - The girls were coming back from a party, apparently. I'm guessing, but the parents were probably in the front seat (news cast just said it was two adults). The girls injured were teens, and the two that died were 13 and 16. It's summer time, after all, so it's not like they were out causing mischief. I, too, am wondering why they didn't have seatbelts on.

james_nac, Good question as to why these girls are riding around at 1:30 in the morning but the fact that several of them did not wear seat belts is beyon comprehension. You would think that out of all the accidents these girls saw on TV or read about involving people being ejected from vehicles, they would put their seat belts on without even having to think about it. Most of us do. Their failure to buckle up contributed to their deaths. As for the drunken scum that caused the accident and murdered them, I don't believe that him having to live with this forever means anyhting. A drunk has no conscience, they don't care about you and me and everyone else, all they care about is their next drink. They are dirt, they are worthless and they are too often murderers. And I know some namby pamby liberal is going to be all offended and say how this drunk or that drunk can't help the way they are because of this excuse or that excuse. All BS. A drunk is a drunk and needs to be locked away.

If those not wearing seatbelts were minors, wouldn't the police cite the driver, whom responsibility then lies with to be sure his passengers are observing the law? The drunk driver is to blame for the accident, but some fault must lie with the driver of the SUV as well, for not buckling up his passengers.
