Houston – The Wildlife Rehab & Education Center is preparing three brown pelicans for their six- hour journey to the Gladys Porter Zoo on Friday morning. The “Three Amigos” were brought to the center about a month ago after they were found injured and suffering from various wing problems.
One of the pelicans was found with a fish hook in his mouth and another in his wing. Unfortunately, the WR&E experts have come to the conclusion that none of these pelicans will ever be able to be rehabilitated in order to successfully survive in the wild.
They will now live out the remainder of their lives in an Educational Exhibit at the zoo located in Brownsville, Texas.
All three of the brown pelicans were born this past spring and are considered juveniles. They typically have a life span of about 25 to 30 years in the wild and were recently taken off the endangered species list. You can learn more about the “Three Amigos” at www.wrande.org.
