KINGWOOD, Texas—A Kingwood family lost their dog and their new home Wednesday in a fire at the Trailwood Village apartments.

HFD said the family had moved into the home in the 2200 block of Lake Village earlier that same day, and had gone to the grocery store when the fire started around 9:30 p.m.

A neighbor spotted the flames and called 911, but by the time fire crews arrived, fire and heavy smoke were shooting from the downstairs unit.

Firefighters made a fast attack and knocked the blaze out before it could spread to other homes, but the family’s apartment was severely damaged.

Firefighters said the family’s dog died in the fire, but their cat somehow survived.

The cause of the fire, which started in the kitchen, is under investigation, but the fire chief said it appears to be electrical.
