HOUSTON—Some people are finding ways to beat the pain at the pump, and a new invention may allow them to do just that.

Susan Barry rides her bright pink Huffy Beachcomber from Montrose to the Medical Center every morning to work.

And yes, she does huff and puff until she turns on her secret weapon.

She has a motor called a Bike Bug mounted on her front wheel!

The Bike Bug is the size of, and sounds like, the motor of a weed eater.

"It saves a lot of money. It’s amazing how much money you spend going to the grocery store and the post office and, you know, it’s so much fun," said Barry.

The device was created by Mike Schneider, a Houston engineer who’s worked on developing the Bike Bug for years.

"I’m doing it because I’ve got a passion for these things," Schneider says.

Schneider just started selling them last month and says the fuel cost about two cents a gallon.

"I’ve worked through this thing and we’ve developed it, and we have it marketable, and we have it where we can put it on any bike for anybody," he said.

For people like Susan, who now depend on it, to get to work every day.
