HOUSTON – Metro officials are taking applications from businesses hurt by the agency’s light rail construction.

They expect to start handing out $5 million in grants in the next 30 to 60 days.

"We don’t intend to save businesses, but we do want to provide relief to businesses," said Stephen Brown, the manager of Metro’s Business Assistance Program.

Metro officials said applicants must show proof of how much the construction is costing them. Eligible businesses must be for-profit and be in good standing with local, state and federal tax requirements.

Each business could get up to $25,000. Officials are now going door-to-door to spread the word and explain how to apply.

The grants can be used to cover utilities, insurance, rent or payroll.

But while business owners seem to appreciate the help, some are wondering whether it’ll be enough.

"The clients just don’t come," said Pedro Turruviartes, the owner of Pedro’s Tire Shop located at 1802 N. Main St. "There’s just too much traffic."

Turruviartes said he is late on his rent this month because his business has slowed to a trickle.

"The only reason I come here is because I know the man," customer Zaragoza Gloria said. "It’s terrible because, not only is there construction here, there’s construction in the neighborhood."

For Turruviartes, that money will have to go a long way, considering construction on Metro’s north line is expected to continue for another three years.

"It’s our belief that, if we can give them enough to just sustain themselves a bit through the tough times, then we’ll all benefit from the outcome of light rail," Brown said.
