HOUSTON—With the heat index in Houston reaching into triple-digits this week, the concern is growing over the elderly.  Extreme heat can be deadly for them.

Leona Brooks, an 85-year-old North Houston resident, said every summer is a battle to survive the heat.

"It gets too hot and I get out of breath and can’t hardly do anything," said Brooks.

On Tuesday, her air conditioner was working, but half the time it doesn’t.

But thanks to the people with Interfaith Ministries and Meals on Wheels, she got some help. They brought her a donated fan to keep her cool.

There are a number of other agencies that can help the elderly in need stay safe this summer by offering air conditioning units or other services.

The City of Houston’s Residential Energy Efficiency Program (REEP) is one of those agencies. The hotline for that program is 832-393-8101. The website is reephouston.net.

Sheltering Arms Senior Services is another resource, as well as the Texas United Way Helpline, which can be reached by dialing 211.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s Houston Heat Relief Team can be reached by calling 713-655-0050.
