HOUSTON—Commuters heading into Houston from the east side on I-10 were stuck in some nasty traffic Friday morning after a fatal crash involving an 18-wheeler.
The westbound lanes of the freeway were closed after a truck driver lost control around 3:30 a.m. and slammed into a guard rail and bridge support near Jensen.
Police said the driver, a woman in her 40s, veered across several lanes of traffic before crashing, but no one else was injured.
The driver died at the scene.
A small amount of diesel fuel spilled out onto the interstate when wreckers tried to move the rig, further delaying the cleanup.
Crews were still at the scene at 9 a.m., and they were expected to be there for a while longer.
Investigators were still working to determine an exact cause, but police believe wet roads were a factor.
"It’s been steady all night so I would say the (roads) were wet and slick," said HPD Sgt. I. Izaguierre.
The identity of the driver was not released.
