HOUSTON -- Street racing is a dangerous pastime that can turn deadly, and it's a growing problem in the Houston area. Just this past Saturday, a crash on the feeder of I-45 and College Street left four people dead and one person injured.
“Per an eyewitness that we had that actually gave a good statement. He stated that we had two trucks that were drag racing down the service road,” said Houston Police Officer Richard White.
Alejandro Mejia, George Dimas Jr., Juan Ceballos and Jesus Dimas De la Rosa died in the crash. Police said the two speeding trucks crashed into two steel poles. Now, the family of one of the deceased is trying to cope with his loss.
“That hurts more because he never told me about it. That he was barely starting to be in this truck club,” said Alejandro Mejia’s sister, Cristina Mejia.
Mejia’s family said they do not believe he was racing, but theysaid the 20-year-old had just joined a truck club in town. People who work along the stretch of I-45 where the crash happened said the area is a hot-spot for street racing. While most street racing cases go unreported, they don’t go unnoticed.
That’s why the Harris County Sheriff's Office is beefing up the county’s street-racing operations. They said that anyone caught in the act will get arrested.
As for the family of Alejandro Mejia, his father said while nothing will bring his son back, he hopes that others learn from his painful experience.
The family is also struggling with the funeral. If you’d like to help, you can donate at any Houston Federal Credit Union. A savings account has been established on behalf of Alejandro Mejia -- account No. 000008097230.
