TEXAS CITY, Texas — Two youth baseball coaches accused of fighting about a trick play during a game pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct charges, police and a court official said Tuesday.
Jose Luis Duran, 38, and Johnathon T. Kimsey, 30, were arrested about 5:30 p.m. Saturday by Texas City police at Godard Park, 2100 25th Ave. N., Capt. Brian Goetschius said.
Officers arrived at the Pee Wee field No. 2 and saw a crowd gathered, Goetschius said.
"Apparently, one of the coaches instructed one of his players to do a trick play," Goetschius said.
The opposing coach became upset, Goetschius said.
"The coach from the opposing team, while the game was in play, left the dugout and approached the other coach at third base," Goetschius said.
The men, both residents of Texas City, argued until the incident turned physical, Goetschius said.
A police report didn’t reveal what type of trick play was called, how old the players were or whether the men required medical attention. It is believed the ages of the youth players were 5 and 6 years old.
Police took the men to the police station, and a magistrate arraigned them. A municipal court judge was holding night court, as part of a special operation, and accepted the men’s no-contest pleadings, Goetschius said.
The judge found the coaches guilty and ordered them to pay fines of $260 each, but the men were granted extensions on payment, a municipal court supervisor said.
The coaches were released at 10 p.m., Goetschius said.
Appeals weren’t filed in the case as of Tuesday, a court supervisor said.
