HOUSTON—Three children were home alone when a fire broke out in their southwest Houston apartment Thursday evening.

The children were at the Courtland Park Apartments in the 6300 block of Westward at Hillcroft when the fire started around 6:30 p.m.

The quick-thinking children, ranging in ages from 9 to 13, rushed out of the burning home and ran to alert their neighbor.

"It happened so quick, the kids came up to me and they were knocking at the door and I just ran out," said Adam Aldana, the neighbor.  "And you know how kids are, they were going up and down. I said, 'Stay down, stay down.' It's a good thing the kids did not get hurt. I understand the stuff, you know, get lost.  I understand it's important to us, but more importantly, they are safe."

Two families were displaced by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and authorities have not said where the parents were.
