HOUSTON—The screams of a horrified mother could be heard throughout a north Houston apartment complex Sunday afternoon after police say her 4-year-old daughter was shot and killed over a car with nice rims.

The 4-year-old's brother was also hurt during the attempted carjacking in the 13000 block of Greens Parkway.

"She was a child and she didn’t have anything to do with it and it’s all because you want to take something that someone else worked for," said the victim’s cousin, Carmella Williams.

Police said around 1:30 p.m., the little girl’s father, mother and their two children were in the Live Oak Bend apartments when they were approached by an unknown suspect. The suspect then demanded the keys to their blue car with custom rims.

"He said he was confused at first," said HPD Homicide Sgt. John Roberts. "He thought it was a joke. He had already put the keys in the ignition and before he could explain that he said, ‘Let me get my family out of the car,’ and he said the guy started shooting."

Police said the suspect opened fire, shooting an unknown number of times. The father jumped into his car to rush his daughter to the hospital. The parents flagged down an officer near the Beltway and TC Jester. The officer called an ambulance.

The little girl was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Family members tell 11 News the 1-year-old boy was recovering and was doing as well as can be expected Sunday night.

Police are still searching for the suspect.

"Just come forward. Give yourself up because it was a child. You know it was a child and it’s not right, it’s not right, "said Williams.
