HOUSTON -- In Harris County child abuse and neglect fatalities almost doubled last year to the highest numbers in Texas.

In 2009    there were 67 cases compared to the 35 cases the year before.

Randy Burton, the founder of the advocacy group, Justice For Children said he’s not surprise.

"I probably should be shocked, but I'm not," he said. "The solution first, is to treat child abuse, which is a crime, as seriously as we treat other crimes and to get serious about intervening on behalf of children."

Harris county district attorney Pat Lykos said the office will get tougher on child abusers.

Lykos says she'll prosecute to the full extent of the law.

"And the tragedy of a baby being abused and murdered [is] the mark of a society is how you care for those who are the weakest,” she said.

In the past three weeks she said they've filed charges in six child abuse fatalities.

The district attorney’s office has also started something called the Child Endangerment Section that goes after predators.

momof3manvel - You read my mind.....It's a shame children have to fall through the cracks because of irresponsible parents...It just hurts my heart to see children suffer. They didn't ask to be brought into this world.

Children are the most innocent and helpless victims and that's why parent's like to abuse them. They figure that they belong to them so they can do what they want with them. The law is to "soft" on the child abuser and like the criminal that they are, they know that they can get away with it becasue most of the time it's pushed to the side or put on the back burner. Abusers seem to forget that children are born innocent and they are God's children, they need to be reminded about what happens when you mess with God's children.

texassizeheart - I'm so sorry no one came to your rescue. Child abuse existed but it wasn't on the forefront like it is now. Maybe not as rampant either. I don't know you personally, but I have to commend you turning out the way you have. Many times it just keeps going on from generation to generation. I'm proud of you and you should be of yourself. My best to you and your family. May God bless you!

Not much different that the other portion of the animal kingdom, right? The laws are present to protect children, and the laws are enforced...however, the decided sentences/penalites are not tough or long enough.

growing up i wonder when the abuse was going to stop? why didn't anybody do anything about the wilts on my body? how could my gym teacher call roll and not see the fresh bruises on my body from the night before I dressed for gym just so someone could see me and do something but it never happened the abuse stop when i was 18yrs of age and that's only cause i got pregnant and left home. Can you imagine what these babies/children are thinking and feeling? why dosen't anybody see or care? I don't beat my kids that's a promise I made to them not to go thru waht i did, the chain of abuse stops here. The law needs to get tougher than ever it needs to start saving these babies it kills me to even think of what they may have been feeling besides the pain. God bless all the little children and keep the safe

It's amazing to me how many things in this country are regulated such as driving a car.... you have to have a driver's license, hunting... need a license for that, too, but any idiot can have children and not take care of them and when caught claim insanity!! uuuggghhh

Toobad - You are on the right track. I have been saying for years that if we would cut out welfare, as it is today, we would drastically reduce child abuse and crime. There are people that have kids for the freebies they get. They don't want the kids and they don't raise them. They dole them out to others to "raise" and the kids learn from the streets. And they don't learn good things. If we stop paying people to have kids they will stop having them. They don't WANT them anyway and will do whatever it takes to rid themselves of them. It is PAST time to cut out the FREEBIES to these FREELOADERS and worthless excuses for parents. ONE strike and you're out. No exceptions!

Cruel and unusual punishment is justified against pieces of trash that abuse and murder infants and children.

I hope the laws now get some teeth when it comes to crimes against children.

a lot of people that should not bear children in the first place does not know the meaning of (use protection) they are just out there having kids out of wedlock, then the tax payers have to take care of the kids, some have kids for the income they recieve from the state, food stamps, welfare etc... if you can't afford to raise your own children may i suggest you don't have any, then find out later you can't raise them and dump them off on the state to take care of,did you ever stop and think of what it does to these kids?

The best place for a child abuser is in general population in prison, they won't want to go back again if they survive.
