It is with great excitement that I share with you the news about a revolutionary device exclusively available at HealthSouth® that is changing lives of many disabled patients in our community. HealthSouth Hospitals in the Houston area are the first to offer the NESS H200™ and L300™, an advanced therapy system that is making a huge difference in the lives of stroke survivors, those with brain injuries, and those with other specific neurological conditions.  HealthSouth, in partnership with Bioness® Inc., is now offering advanced technology that gives these patients HOPE to recover function of their feet and hands. This improved function can translate into the ability to do those tasks they currently find impossible.

Here’s how it works.  It is believed that following a stroke or brain injury, through repetitive training using electrical stimulation, the patient reeducates muscles by forming new connections in the brain.  The NESS H200 or L300 is a portable, electrical stimulation device that fits over the patient’s hand and forearm, or just below the knee, and is programmed through a remote microprocessor.  This means that individuals right here in Houston now have the potential to recover the ability to grasp objects, dress themselves, and lift their foot to more safely and easily walk on flat ground, stairs, and uneven surfaces.

• The device is intended for use by patients with stroke, traumatic brain injury, C5 or incomplete spinal cord injuries, and certain other disorders of the central nervous system who are experiencing upper or lower limb dysfunction, including Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, and Parkinson’s Disease.
• The device is appropriate for patients in early recovery and for individuals who are longer term post-injury.
• A physician’s order is needed for occupational or physical therapy to determine if the device is the right “fit” for a candidate and to supervise ongoing therapy.
