How Not to Look Old: Six Summer Beauty Secrets

In her new book HOW NOT TO LOOK OLD, beauty and style expert Charla Krupp rewrites the rules of aging, offering a comprehensive plan of attack. Charla draws on years of experience as a top beauty and fashion magazine editor, style expert on NBC’s Today Show as well as the advice and guidance of her friends -- the best hair stylists, make-up artists, designers, dermatologists, cosmetic dentists, and personal shoppers -- in the business. Today Charla is here with us to share her top six beauty secrets for looking Y&H this summer.

Olay Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming UV Moisturizer SPF 15, $27.99

If your moisturizer doesn’t include a sunscreen, you’ll need to add one to your beauty routine. Sunscreen – at least SPF 15 – is essential not only for preventing skin cancer but also for defending against the UV damage that leads to signs of aging. For everyday use, I like the Olay Definity Deep Penetrating Foaming UV Moisturizer. It has SPF 15, moisturizes and also fights age spots and wrinkles.

Hair Protection Spray: Phyto Plage “L’Originale” Protective Beach Spray, $20

When thinking about SPF coverage, don’t forget about protecting your hair! Summer sun and chlorine can do a number on your hair color. To maintain your color and luster, get fanatic about spritzing on a spray with UV protection designed especially for hair, like this one from Phyto’s beach collection.

Lip Color: Chanel Glossimer in Rose Sand, $25

Nothing shows off newly bronzed skin – fake or otherwise – like a pink lipgloss. While dark lip colors make lips look thin and emphasize undereye circles, the right pink lightens up the mouth and adds luminosity to our complexions. I love this classic baby pink shade from Chanel – it’s a great color that goes with everything.

Leg Spray: Michael Kors Leg Shine, $32

Since you won’t be wearing stockings during the summer months, you need to make sure your legs look good enough to be on display. The appearance of your legs hinges on the appearance of your skin. It needs to be soft, smooth, and hairless, with a little color and no visible veins. This product from Michael Kors isn’t full coverage or a spray, but rather a sexy, shiny shimmer in a deodorant-like push-up stick. I love it because you can apply it on the go!

Light Nail Color: Essie Limo-scene, $8

Don’t get me wrong, I love fun, outrageous nail polish colors, but I usually save them for my toes. On fingernails, a pretty, sheer pink or beige will take you anywhere, from a business lunch to a wedding. Light colors elongate the look of your fingers, whereas bright colors can make them look stubby.

Sunglasses: Robert Marc, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana

An easy way to pump up your sexiness quotient is to slip on a pair of large shades whenever you step out of the house – whether it’s sunny or not. You’ll look mysterious and chic, plus it’s a great way to shave time off your beauty regimen when you don’t have a few extra minutes to put on eye makeup. Sunglasses also act as sunblock for your eyes, shielding them from UV rays. You’ll also squint less with shades, helping you keep crow’s feet and forehead wrinkles at bay.
