DIY Christmas Treats

Brown Bag Caramel Corn


  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup white corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 Stick (4 oz.) margarine or butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 to 4 quarts of POPPED corn


Combine all ingredients except soda and popped corn in a 1½ to 2 quart microwave safe bowl. Put in microwave (HIGH) and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes. Remove from microwave and stir in soda. Put the popped corn in a brown grocery bag and pour the syrup over the corn. Close the bag by rolling it down a couple times and SHAKE HARD. Cook in the bag on HIGH microwave for 1½ minutes. Remove and shake vigorously and cook in the microwave another 1½ minutes. Remove and shake again. Microwave another 1½ minutes. Shake when you remove it from the microwave and pour it on a large cookie sheet to cool. Store in an airtight container when cool.


Mexican Cheese Crackers


  • 1 package (141/2  ounces ) cheese crackers
  • ½ cup butter or margarine melted
  • 1 pkg. taco seasoning mix
  • 1 T. Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp. season salt


Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place the crackers on a baking sheet. Pour the remaining ingredients which have been mixed together over the crackers. Stir and bake for 1 hour stirring every 15 minutes. Pour onto waxed paper and cool. Store in airtight container.


Chocolate – Mint Dessert Spread


  • 3 packages (8 oz. each ) cream cheese softened
  • 1 1/2 cups melted semisweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup crème de menthe liqueur or mint flavoring (to taste as mint flavoring has various strengths)
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon


Combine above until smooth. Chill at least 1 hour. Divide into balls of desired size and roll in

 2 cups finely chopped pecans

 Or pack in a decorative serving piece and sprinkle coarsely chopped pecans on top.

 Serve with - chocolate cookie wafers of shortbread cookies


Boursin Cheese Spread (Pinecone Cheese Ball)


  • 2 pkgs. (8 ounces each) softened cream cheese
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/4 tsp. dried dill weed
  • 1/4 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1/4 tsp. marjoram
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper


Mix all ingredients together and chill overnight for flavors to develop.

 Serve at room temperature


Reindeer Cupcakes

Bake cupcakes of desired flavor and ice with brown icing

Use small pretzels for the antlers

Use a Vanilla Wafer for the face

White candy or icing for the eyes and use a dot of black icing if desired for accent

Use a red hots, red or brown M&Ms or chocolate balls  for the nose


Pretzel Kisses


  •  24 small pretzels
  • 24 Chocolate Kisses or Rolo Candies
  • 24 (small package) M&Ms


Preheat oven to 350 degrees

 Place the pretzels on a baking sheet and the top with either the Kiss or Rolo candy. Bake in oven for 1 or 2 minutes until Kiss is soft. Take out of oven and put the M&M on top of the Kiss or Rolo. Place in the refrigerator until set.
