Dying teen gets royal treatment for homecoming

Student gets royal treatment for homecoming

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Homecoming is a special night for many high schools students, and on Friday, Sept. 9 one very special Ballard High School student is getting the royal treatment.

Sixteen-year-old Amzie Smith is on the homecoming court and her courage is sure to inspire you.

“Amzie is like a rock star,” Staci Eddleman said.  “Everybody knows who she is, and they want to know her.”

“She’s the sweetest girl you’ll ever meet inside and out,” Macie Collins said.

Smith is a typical 16-year-old at Ballard High School, but behind that smile she is battling through a lifetime of adversity.

“I have stage 4 liver cancer,” Smith said.  “Adult liver cancer is rare in adults, but almost unheard of in children.

I went through two rounds of chemo in January, and it didn’t end up working.  Right now I’m not on any treatments and we’re going to see what happens.”

Her prognosis is uncertain, but she’s vowed to live her life to the fullest, and inspire those around her.

“At first it was hard,” Smith said.  “I was a little upset and angry, but I quickly realized that this was God’s purpose for me.  I can use it to spread inspiration, and kindness.”

“It makes me feel like there’s hope,” Madison Powell said.  “Even through everything I’ll still be OK.”

“It brings me so much happiness that I’m able to turn this horrible thing into something so great that is inspiring other people,” Smith said.

How much time she has left is uncertain, so she sets goals for each day.

On Friday at halftime the Ballard football game she hopes to live out a goal of being a homecoming princess, but the list doesn’t stop there.

“As I’m getting closer, and having the time of my life and enjoying myself,” Smith said.  “I’m ready whenever because I know where I’m going, but I want as much time as I can so if I make it to my birthday and then aim for Halloween, and then Thanksgiving, and then Christmas and we’ll keep going from there.”
