Flashback photos: Ron Stone, Dan Rather

Dan Rather and Ron Stone were the faces of KHOU 11 News back in the 1960s. Stone was working in Tulsa when he caught Rather’s eye in 1961. Rather, who was then Channel 11 ‘s lead anchor, brought him to Houston. Stone took over the lead job when Rather left to work for CBS News. Stone spent the rest of his broadcast career in Houston and was called "the most popular and revered news anchor the city has ever known" by the Houston Chronicle. He retired in 1992 and died of cancer in 2008.

KHOU is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year! Channel 11 signed on the air on March 22, 1953, as KGUL-TV in Galveston. In June 1959, the station changed its call letters to KHOU and relocated to Houston.
