AUSTIN, Texas -- Brave souls dared to start off 2014 with an icy plunge in Barton Springs Pool.

On Wednesday the 34th annual Polar Bear Splash began around 10 a.m. and was open to the public.

This year's special guest was Mayor Lee Leffingwell.

"This is about a shared adventure of being an Austinite, the wonder of celebrating a beginning with friends, a reminder that we have a unique ecological treasure in the heart of our city, and the positive renewal of spirit that we experience on the first day of every New Year," said Mayor Leffingwell.

Barton Springs Pool is open until 10 p.m. if you dare to start off 2014 with a chilly adventure.
