HOUSTON – George Strait will return to RodeoHouston in 2013 for a special concert-only performance with Martina McBride.

It’s been awhile since the country superstar has performed at the rodeo, much to the disappointment of his fans

"George has had a lot of special moments in the 30 years since he first appeared at the Show," said Leroy Shafer, chief operating officer of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Strait first performed at the rodeo in 1983 when Eddie Rabbit got sick at the last minute.

"I remember the day we flew him in as a replacement act an hour before his performance. He took the stage and quickly stole the hearts of our Rodeo fans," Shafer said.

Since that first performance 30 years ago, Strait has played to more than 1 million RodeoHouston fans and was inducted into the Show’s Star Trail of Fame in 1996.

Strait is easily one of the most famous country music entertainers in the world and holds some of the highest honors in the business. With the most number one, gold and platinum albums in all of country music, Strait is third to Elvis Presley and The Beatles for the most gold and platinum albums in the history of music. He is the seventh best-selling artist in American music and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006. His string of number one hits now equals his age of 59.

Strait’s concert is scheduled for March 17 at Reliant Stadium. There won’t be any rodeo action that day, but the carnival and livestock show will be open for business.
