HOUSTON – The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s world championship Barbecue contest heated up Thursday night at Reliant Park.

This is the 38th year of the event, which is three days of slicing, dicing, eating and entertaining.

The grills had been fired up since sunrise and the contestants were working hard to out smoke their competition.

"It's about five days of out here around the clock,” said Stuart Gagnon, with Sharks R Us. :You are out here early in the morning to get the fire started and they don't shut down until 11 p.m. and you got to clean.”
The event will open to the public Friday and Saturday.

Last year, the contest broke an attendance record with more than 221,000 visitors. Organizers are hoping that this year there will be even more people hungry for sausages, brisket and ribs.
