HOUSTON—The popular Broadway show “Wicked” is back in Houston for a five-week run.

On Tuesday, crews worked feverishly to get the musical’s elaborate set in place.

Production manager David O’Brien said it takes 30 hours to assemble the set and that the Hobby Center is a great place for a high-caliber performance.

“There is a lot of room backstage, the dressing room areas are beautiful, and then I look out into the house and it’s one of those cities where there is not a bad seat in the house,” O’Brien said.

Wicked tells the story of a friendship between two witches from the Land of Oz, well before Dorothy entered the picture.

It has been nominated for and won multiple Tony Awards and this October will mark its 10th anniversary on Broadway.

Company manager Kevin Beebee said even those who have seen the show, will enjoy this latest run in Houston.

“The cast is 100 percent brand new so even if you’ve seen the show, you won’t have seen this show,” Beebee said.

Beebee credits the longevity of the show with its timeless themes.

“There is a beautiful story about the friendship of the witches; it’s still relevant today and it’s also a story about acceptance,” Beebee said.

He said the cast and crew is also excited to experience the city.

“Houston is also a great community—there is so many great restaurants, grocery stores and movie theaters, just everything you might take for granted living in a city that we all have to find and explore for the first time,” he said.

They will have plenty of time to do it all. The show runs from July 10th to August 11th.
