Reliving the Old West at Ranch Rodeo

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's Ranch Rodeo competition is one of the best shows at NRG Park, officials said.

HOUSTON – If you are headed to the Rodeo Friday stop by the NRG Arena to check out an event called Ranch Rodeo.

The event includes some unusual competitions by hardcore cowboys and cowgirls. It takes cowboys and cowgirls who live and work on huge Texas cattle ranches and places them in competitions to see who can “break” a horse, brand a cow—using chalk, not hot irons, and milk a wild cow the fastest.

Tucker Knight, who is chairman of the Ranch Rodeo Committee, said the cows have hardly ever had human contact so catching them and milking them gets “wild and wooly.”

Ranch Rodeo competition is Friday at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in NRG Arena. Finals are Saturday at 8 p.m.

Officials said Ranch Rodeo crowds are a “fun” bunch. The action is extremely close and each team of ranch hands always draws in a lively following from as far away as the Texas Panhandle.
